What are dental implants?

Dental implants are the newest way for dentists to help their patients replace missing teeth. The secret to the procedure lies in a very special type of metal: titanium. Unlike other substances, titanium has a unique property: it can directly fuse to bone. Doctors, for example, often use titanium in hip replacements or to help them successfully repair complex bone fractures because the material integrates so well with the rest of the body.

Dentists have found a use for this metal as well when placing dental implants. Because even a small piece of titanium can bond to the existing bone, dentists can use the titanium piece to attach dental prosthetics directly to the mouth. As you’ve probably guessed by now, this process is the implantation process. In essence, dental implants are small, tooth root-shaped pieces of titanium that are embedded into the jawbone and to which dental crowns are then attached as an artificial tooth, bridge, or denture.

Why should I get a dental implant?

The dental implant process may sound strange at first, but it is actually a big improvement over previous restorative procedures like dentures and bridges. First of all, dental implants have an advantage over dentures because they are permanent prosthetics that are firmly attached to the mouth. With a dental implant, you don’t have to worry about losing or breaking your prosthetic. All you need to do is brush and floss around the implant to maintain it.

Second of all, dental implants are preferred by dentists because they can restore a tooth without impacting any of the other teeth in the mouth. For example, one of the most common restorative techniques, the dental bridge, attaches to the mouth via the teeth surrounding the gap. To create the bridge, the neighboring teeth must be shaved down and altered, even though they are perfectly healthy. Dental implants, on the other hand, are embedded directly into the jawbone just in the place of the missing tooth. It doesn’t impact the health of other teeth in the mouth.

And, furthermore, once the dental implant is in place, the results are quite stunning. The tooth is both functionally and aesthetically equivalent to an ordinary tooth. You don’t have to worry about changing your chewing patterns or diet to accommodate for the implant because it works just like an ordinary tooth. So long as you brush twice a day and floss at least once a day, your dental implant should work well: no extra maintenance steps are needed.

Dental implants also look exactly like ordinary teeth. The crown of the implant is fashioned from a composite material that can be dyed to match the shade of your teeth exactly. Once the procedure is over, no one should be able to tell the difference between the implant and the rest of your teeth. Thus, you can completely restore the lost tooth with zero impact to the aesthetics of your mouth, making dental implants a great cosmetic dentistry procedure.

What is the dental implant procedure like?

bkpam2127667_implantinvsi-300x117To get a dental implant, two crucial steps must be taken to ensure the success of the prosthetic. The first step, of course, is actually implanting the titanium rod. Again, a surgical step is necessary. Your dentist will inject a local anesthesia to make sure you remain painless before carefully implanting the titanium into your gums. Once the appropriate placement is reached, the implant is allowed to heal so the titanium gets the chance to fuse with the jawbone.

Once the implant heals, your dentist will carefully attach a dental crown to the prosthetic. As mentioned above, the crown will be made from a composite mixture and will be dyed to look exactly like an ordinary tooth. No one should be able to tell that the implant is actually a prosthetic. The dental crown ensures that the tooth will both look and work just as well as before the surgery.

Implant-Supported Dentures

Dental implants can also be used to support an entire row of teeth, called a denture. Unlike removable dentures, which rest on the gums and require the use of the mouth muscles and denture adhesive to keep the false teeth in place, implant-supported dentures are permanently fixed in the mouth. That eliminates any slipping.
